Melissa, Mike and I return with “A Saul and Battery”, a LIVE recap show of Better Call Saul! This seasons we will be doing the show on Tuesdays at 9pm Central time. Usually.
This week an addicting app and the inside story behind a classic animated series.
Mel’s Recommendation:
Game App: The Impossible Letter Game
It’s FREE!
The point is to find the Letter or Number that doesn’t belong. This sounds pretty easy, until you realize you’re already out of time. Then the letters start dancing around the screen in what is called “Turbulence”. You will hate Turbulence. I promise.
If you like immensely frustrating puzzle games, you’re gonna love this one.
There is a level for each letter of the alphabet and a number of puzzles per level.
Rabbit is a service that allows up to 15 people to share pretty much anything on the web. Including whatever bad Syfy-ish movies you might have lying around.
Your friends do need to have a Rabbit account, then just invite them to your room, queue up a YouTube, Netflix, etc video and you can chat about it in real time either with video, voice, or text chat.
The web interface is super nice, and looks a lot better than G+ Hangouts do.
There is also an iPhone app, but it doesn’t yet work well on iPad.
Dylan’s Recommendation:
Everybody say Hi to Dylan. He has a very active YouTube channel with lots of interesting discussions on all manner of topics including Doctor Who and various comics.
Movie: The Pirate Movie (1982)
This spoofy gem from 1982 stars Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins (yes the one from Blue Lagoon)
This movie is almost the entire reason Dylan got to marry his lovely wife, Dawn.
It’s a nice little sort of remake of the Pirates of Penzance and is a MUSICAL! There is singing, nerdy girls, lots of pop culture references, and sexually frustrated pirates. We all like sexually frustrated pirates.
While it is available on DVD, the audio leaves a few things to be desired. See below for an alternative.
Mel’s Recommendation:
TV Series: The 100
This is a post apocalyptic dystopia. That’s really all we need to say, right?
Anyway, after a nuclear war, the last remnants of humanity live in an Ark cobbled together from 12 Space Stations. 97 years later, resources are low and our post apocalyptic dystopia decides to send 100 juvenile criminals down to the Ground to see if the radiation is better. It is, but something else survives and starts killing off the kids.
Despite being on The CW network, this show really delves into the moral choices such an existence can force one to make, and the inevitable consequences.
Season 1 and 2 are available on Netflix, and Season 3 recently started on the CW Thursday nights.
This week Mel hangs out with evil monkeys and Kelly gets a new toy.
Mel’s Recommendation:
Comic: Clean Room by Gail Simone and John Davis-Hunt
This is a new psychological horror graphic novel available through Vertigo
Journalist Chloe Pierce sets out to discover the secrets behind a giant self-help guru’s organization that she believes is behind her fiance’s suicide. As her quest continues, she starts to experience some very disturbing visions/hallucinations. Will a visit to Astrid Mueller’s secret Clean Room answer all of her questions?
Prepare to be disturbed y’all. There are monkeys. Evil demon monkeys.
An inexpensive yet functional smartwatch that works excellently for notifications and reminders without having to reach for your android phone.
It works with many apps you already use on your Android phone with more available regularly.
It also looks pretty good, with numerous wristbands available. Some feel that the bezel might be too big, but for $149 what are you really complaining about here?
Definitely give it a look if you’re in the market for a smartwatch.
Social Media Recommendation:
David M Latt (@DavidMLatt): has worked with the Asylum, to make many of our favorite Syfy channel movies, AND ZNATION!
Sorry. Really nothing about lottery tickets here, but this week’s podcast was tough to title. We do have a couple of Netflix options for you this week though…
As you would expect, Mel recommends a Western and Kelly recommends a romantic comedy. Like we do.
Mel’s Recommendation:
Movie: The Salvation (2014)
Stars Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Eva Green, among many others.
This a revenge story set in the Old West and you get to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan be a BAD GUY before you see him as Negan in The Walking Dead.
You can watch it for a short while on Showtime On Demand or on the Showtime App.
Look at that face!
Kelly’s Recommendation:
Movie: Joe vs The Volcano (1990)
Stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in a ROMANTIC COMEDY! Yes Folks, Kelly recommended a Romantic Comedy!
Tom Hanks plays “Joe”, a guy who works in the bleakest factory/office EVER, and he is diagnosed with a terminal Brain Cloud. He agrees to let a rich guy drop him into a volcano in exchange for a boatload of money to enjoy himself before he dies. From his Brain Cloud.
Meg Ryan is awesome playing 3 different roles.
Dig through your local discount DVD bins to pick this one up. Or pay $2.99 to catch on Amazon Video (Troll 2 costs that)
Watch the movie opening below. You will HAVE to feel better about wherever you work!
Mel’s Social Media Corner:
@DeathMedieval: Medieval Death Bot: tweets real deaths taken from medieval coroner’s notes.
John Funke, died 1348, having been sick in bed, rose to wandering at midnight as though he were mad, fell into a cesspit and there drowned.
We are joined by our good friend Alicia and recommend some great music, dark humor, and some reading that features dog men! We also learn more than we wanted to about Kelly’s strange fear of a naked Daniel Radcliffe.
Kelly’s Recommendation:
Vinyl: David Bowie’s album: Scary Monsters and Super Creeps (1980)
Bowie’s first album after the “Berlin Trilogy” with Brian Eno.
Robert Fripp and Pete Townsend lend their guitar prowess to the album.
If you don’t have a turntable, you can check the album out on Spotify
Plus, Ashes to Ashes has a pretty amazing video…
Alicia’s Recommendation:
TV Series: A Young Doctor’s Notebook and Other Stories (2013)
A British Dark Comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm set during the Russian Revolution
They play the same character only at different times in his life AND they interract!
A Fun sitcom about a woman who was kidnapped as a teenager and locked underground by an Apocalypse Cult Preacher.
What? That doesn’t sound like a sitcom? Well, it is. It adorable and fun, and very life-affirming without being horrifyingly silly.
It also has one the best Songify type Theme Songs EVER!
Kelly’s Recommendation:
TV Series: Better Call Saul Season 1
Did you know we do a recap show about Better Call Saul? You didn’t?! Well get this Blu-ray set and then go here and watch us discuss every episode on A Saul and Battery.
There are loads of extras on this Season 1 set, that really make this a great buy for every Better Call Fan.
The new season starts mid- February, so hurry up!
Here’s a Blooper Reel from Season 1 —- WARNING—- STRONG LANGUAGE—- VERY STRONG LANGUAGE—
a new book series that bridges the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens
It features a large cast of interesting characters, including a kick-ass battle droid named Mister Bones. I want a Mister Bones of my very own. We have a slightly bratty overly clever teenager, a kick ass fighter pilot mom, a Zabrak bounty hunter, and a former Imperial Loyalty Officer. Oh, and Wedge Antilles.
There has been a little bit of controversy around this book from some folks who claim this book has some sort of Gay Agenda. I looked really hard folks, but I failed to find a Big Gay Jedi Agenda. So draw your own conclusions.
It’s a fun action packed caper. Give it a read and let me know who your favorite character was. Mine was Sinjir. 😉
