Episode 104 – Slingshotenstein

Gaming, genius… good golly!

Kelly’s Recommendation:

WolfensteinET

Game: Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

  • a free team-based multi-player online pc game developed by Splash Damage.
  • It works on PC, Mac, and even Linux systems. Go here to download.
  • Pick a server, a side (Axis or Allies), and then your character class (there are 5 types) and join a game.
  • Thanks to @TonySolo for bringing this one to our attention!
  • Give it a try even if your pc is a little (or a lot) old. Splash Damage says it will work even on a Win 98 machine!

Mel’s Recommendation:

Slingshot

Documentary: Slingshot

  • This doc is about Dean Kamen (the inventor of the Segway… and lots of other things) and his journey to create a machine to bring clean water to the world. That machine is called the SlingShot.
  • It’s available on Netflix and is really an inspiring, uplifting documentary. And really, Mel doesn’t find much “uplifting”.

Kelly’s Social Media Corner:

Follow any of the lady’s with @TexansCheer: The Houston Texans Cheerleaders. Start with @HTC_SarahC and go from there!

Episode 103 – Demonic Bill Pullman is better than your Swiss Miss

A holiday, a super bad movie, and cocoa awesomeness this week from Mel & Kel

Happy Belated HARBOR DAY!

Check out the official FB group. And here’s the New Yorker article that awarded Harbor Day it’s National Holiday Status.  But you probably won’t.  We knew that.  It is difficult to simply click a link, isn’t it?

Mel’s Recommendation

crio-bru-chocolate-drink

Food/Drink: Crio Bru

  • This is a delicious cocoa bean drink. It could be called a “Coffee alternative” in that it claims to provide energy with only trace amounts of caffeine.
  • It’s full of good stuff like antioxidants and lots of healthy sounding things, but the real take here is that it’s made from the same stuff chocolate comes from!
  • The cool part? It brews up much like coffee. You can make it in your automatic drip coffeemaker, or a French Press. Personally,. I think the flavor is better from the French Press, but is the best from my Aeropress (though this is a slightly more difficult process).

Kelly’s Recommendation

Movie/Documentary: The Creeping Terror and The Creep Behind the Camera

creeping-terror Creep

The Creeping Terror:

  • The Creeping Terror just may be the worst movie ever made, but you can watch it for free on YouTube.
  • It kind of defies words…a large alien carpet very slowly devours a bunch of people. Said people could easily run away, but for some reason don’t.
  • William Thourlby (aka the original Marlboro Man) was in it for some reason.
  • This charming movie was made by a very less than charming person named Vic Savage. His story is told in The Creep Behind the Camera. Seriously, he made the actors pay him to be in the movie.

The Creep Behind the Camera

  • This documentary tells the story of Vic Savage who was well, creepy. “Like a demonic Bill Pullman”.
  • While it’s an interesting story, it may be hard watching for some. Vic is … abusive.
  • There’s also a Charles Manson connection.
  • If you are an Amazon Prime member you can watch this one for free here.

Kelly owes this Creeping gem to Late Night Movie Club that is hosted by Patrick aka @TheClurichaun over at SyFyDesigns.com every Saturday night. Hit Patrick up if you want to join. It’s great fun!

Kelly’s Social Media Corner:

Amy @AmyRushall: One of the newest members of team Harbor Day! She really brought her best passive-aggressive game to the group.

Episode 102 – Fallout with some Hollywood Vampires

Well, well, well. Here’s some more Alice Cooper and post-apocalyptic gaming for you from Kelly and Mel!

Kelly’s Recommendation:

HollywoodVampires

Album: The Hollywood Vampires by The Hollywood Vampires

  • Wait for it ….. Alice Cooper!
  • This is Alice’s tribute to his old cohorts from the first Hollywood Vampires and features quite a few awesome musicians (Brian Johnson, Paul McCartney, Perry Farrel, Dave Grohl, Joe Perry, Joe Walsh, Johnny Depp, and more!)
  • The entire album is available on Spotify.

Mel’s Recommendation:

fallout_4.001

Game: Fallout 4 by Bethesda

  • This one’s available on PC AND all of the consoles!
  • Journey through a Post Apocalyptic Wasteland with a dog named Dogmeat, and your robot butler named Codsworth.
  • This features one of Mel’s other loves, Retro Futurism. Think 1950s version of the future. Also Diamond City radio plays some awesome tunes. Butcher Pete by Roy Brown is disturbing (so many dirty songs here folks 🙂 )
  • This game features a huge world to explore and possibly kill you. There’s lots of Crafting, Settlement building, and shooting bad guys and mutants. There’s also some mutant cows. They’re kinda cute. Mine likes to sleep in the house….

Episode 101- Mo Novels Mo Eno

We start off our next set of 100 podcasts with a great app and more on a musical genius.

Mel’s Recommendation:

SerialBox

App: Serial Box

  • A new app that delivers choice serialized novels to you in both text and/or audio versions on your phone or tablet.
  • There are 2 current ongoing novels, with a third starting in January.
  • A new episode is released every week, and you can buy the new episode right from within the app.
  • I really prefer this experience to the way the Kindle handles serials, so check it out.
  • It’s available on iOS and Android.

Kelly’s Recommendation:

BrianEnoDoc

Documentary: Brian Eno – 1971-1977: The Man Who Fell To Earth

  • This Doc covers Brian Eno’s career after he left Roxy Music from 1971-1977
  • Available on Amazon Prime Video or over on YouTube (in 16 parts!).
  • Covers the 3 albums that he did with David Bowie; his own albums, such as Another Green World (a MUST listen); collaborations with folks like Robert Fripp; and his emergence into ambient music.
  • He also starts his own record label during all of this!

Kelly’s Recommendation Corner:

@AshleyElizabeth: a very funny Live Tweeter of Gotham and The Walking Dead (just to name a few). HAIL HYDRA!

The week long wait is OVER!!!

We hope you enjoyed part 1 of show 100 and finally you will find out the winner of RECOMMENDATION MADNESS!!

To take us through the Braavos and Dorne backets, we were joined by @Atypical_Ashley@ohalchemygirlMattShivers_VO and @missdestructo (!!!)

ashley alicia

mattamber

Careful listeners will note a brief visit from @sean_schick as well during Matt’s picks (sorry).

Once we got down to 8 remaining recommendations, @HeleMcGe  and @mcgenva joined us to wrap this up and name a champion!

helenajohn

In the spirit of NO SPOILERS, we will wait to send out a congratulatory post sometime later.

The special YouTube version of this show is also now available on our playlist and suitable for framing.

Again, we would like to thank all of you who have listened, supported and/or joined us on our little podcast.  You are the ones that make it fun to do.

And again, except Sean.  Because… jerk.

Episode 100 (part 1) – Recommendation MADNESS

To celebrate our 100th podcast, we decided to do something different from our usual format, so we set up a tournament featuring past recommendations and asked a bunch of our friends to help us out.

64 recommendations… 10 guests… 3 near evictions… cellos… Alice Cooper… and MORE!

So MUCH more in fact – we had to make this show into two parts.  This week you will hear the “King in the North” and “Clegane” brackets.  Next week we go through the “Braavos” and “Dorne” brackets AND the final rounds taking us to the …

RECOMMENDATION MADNESS WINNER!!

In addition,  we are using a limited edition theme song that combines the two we have used during past shows…  plus a corgi (of course).  Regular listeners may recall that usually the YouTube version of the show just displays the Nurture and Support logo.  For these two shows we spiced the video version up a little bit too.  Just a little, you’ll have to wait until the picks start being made.  Be sure to check it out.

Special thanks to the “pickers” for this week’s show, @katefrost_inc, @officialpagan, @GeraldWebb, and @Sean_Schick

katepagan

geraldsean

Because we recorded this over several weeks and these great folks made the time to help us when their schedules permitted, you will also hear a bit from @ohalchemygirl (while Gerald is picking) and @MattShivers_VO (while Sean is picking) this week… and much more from them next week 🙂

alicia matt

As usual, @MattShivers_VO did us a solid (for Mel/in spite of Kelly) and created some nice audio segments for us to include as well.  Thanks Matt!!

We would like to thank all of you who have listened, supported and/or joined us on our little podcast.  You are the ones that make it fun to do.

Episode 99 – We have one hyphenated word for you… Hip-Hopera!

Kelly’s daughter Karen joins us again for a show with services, games, and songs… but mostly Hip-Hopera!

Mel’s Recommendation:

Website: Fiverr.com

  • a Global Online Marketplace where you can hire a freelancer to help you with most any digital product you need.
  • Each “Gig” starts out at $5, hence the name.
  • Mel finds it particularly useful for Graphic Design stuff, but the list is pretty limitless of what you can find.

Karen’s Recommendation:

CostumeQuest

Game: Costume Quest 1 & 2

  • a #SuperCute game where your character uses abilities gained from their Halloween Costume to defeat some evil candy-stealing monsters.
  • It’s by the cool folks over at Double Fine who also made Stacking.
  • Costume Quest is available on PC, Playstation and Xbox, and Wii so you really don’t have an excuse not to check it out.

Musical: Hamilton

hamilton

  • A Hip-Hopera tale about Alexander Hamilton.  If he sounds familiar, it’s because he was a Founding Father.
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda created it based on the biography, ‘Alexander Hamilton’ by Ron Chernow.
  • There are Rap Battles between Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson…
  • The Soundtrack is available pretty much everywhere, including Amazon Prime 😉

Kelly’s Recommendation:

newmansailaway

Music: Sail Away by Randy Newman

  • a 1972 album by Randy Newman featuring a mix of varying political messages, burning rivers, and even a dancing bear.
  • Many of these songs were actually covered by other artists.
  • You can find most of these on YouTube and Spotify.
  • Kelly is a huge fan of Randy and recommends this as your “starter album” if you are just trying him out.

Make sure to listen to next week’s episode, as we have some cool stuff planned for EPISODE 100!

Episode 98 – Pressure Tape

Crazy videos and crazy cooking.  Who could ask for more?

Kelly’s Recommendation:

Tapeheads

Movie: Tapeheads (1988)

  • John Cusack and Tim Robbins start form a video production company…
  • Lots of musical artists make appearances: Don Cornelius (Soul Train), Weird Al, Ted Nugent, Courtney Love, and more!
  • Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles commercial…

Mel’s Recommendation:

YouTube Channel: Simple Daily Recipes

  • The video channel of Jill McKeever who makes vegan and oil free meals in a neato pressure cooker called an Instant Pot.
  • She has a lot of fun with this folks and vegan food really does need more fun in it. 😉 There are bunny ears y’all…
  • If you have an electric pressure cooker and need some help cooking with it, check her out!

Episode 97 – An octopus grows old eating

John and Helena join Mel and Kelly again providing a podcast jammed full with FOUR recommendations.  No extra charge.

Unlike LAST week, there are no jerks in this episode.

Mel’s Recommendation:

walkingOctopus

Book/Art: Walking Your Octopus by Brian Kesinger

  • No, that is not code for something…
  • It’s a Victorian Steampunk book with very charming art prints featuring Victoria and Otto, her pet land octopus.
  • It features loads of tips on living with your pet octopus and would make a great gift for the Steampunk fan in your life.
  • Check out bkartonline.com and go to the shop section to get your own.

Helena’s Recommendation:

plan-to-eat-400x200

Website: PlanToEat.com

  • A Recipe Management and Menu-Planning site that does just what it says… It helps you Plan what To Eat for the week.
  • It has the ability to import recipes from other websites and generate your shopping list.
  • It does require some money, but at about $39/yr, it’s a pretty good deal.

John’s Recommendation:

NPIC

Book: NPIC Seeing the Secrets Growing the Leaders by Jack O’Connor

  • NPIC is about the National Photographic Interpretation Center where John actually worked.
  • It’s a fascinating story of the creation of a key member of the intelligence community and their not as glamorous as “Homeland” work.
  • Think Cuban Missile Crisis and the Chernobyl Meltdown.

Kelly’s Recommendation:

howold

Website: How-Old.net

  • Don’t call it Artificial Intelligence anymore folks…. it’s now called Machine Learning.
  • You input your name, and it pulls up some photos and guesses your age. This could be scary or terribly funny…
  • Do you dare “Get a Human Opinion?”

Social Media Recommendations:

Helena: @atlasobscura: If you like giant flaming holes in the ground..

John: Hunting-henry.tumblr.com: Henry is an Airedale. He travels. He might be magical. Try to find him wherever he travels. henry   Kelly: @henderson_trina: She’s an artist who also likes to livetweet some Gotham!

Episode 96 – We had a guest, he was a jerk

In this episode, we are joined by Sean, who apparently did not know Kelly titles the episodes.

#jerkwars

Kelly’s Recommendation:

ALiceGoesToHell

Music: Alice Cooper Goes To Hell by…Alice Cooper

  • In 1976 Alice’s version of hell is DISCO!
  • Includes a BALLAD, but he was not wearing a Travoltaesque Leisure Suit.
  • The first song on the album is Go To Hell, which includes a Paul Lynde impression.
  • Here’s a Spotify link, if you’re so inclined.

I really like Alice’s wardrobe in that video! ~M

We are super happy that Sean Schick joined us for this show! Go follow him @Sean_Schick on twitter!

Sean’s Recommendation:

vivino

App: Vivino Wine Scanner

  • Vivino is an app that helps you keep track of your favorite wines, and also to find new wines based on other users’ ratings.
  • It also helps you find the best price in your area.
  • Available on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

Mel’s Recommendation:

Cool Stuff/ Website: Modulicious by Paul McCue

ZenTrooper

  • Modulicious.com is Paul’s website and store that includes amazing altered art.
  • Mel’s favorite has to be the Zen Troopers (Buddhas with Storm Trooper/Darth Vader/Boba Fett’s head)

Kelly’s Social Media Corner:

Corin Nemec: @imcorinnemec: Actor, Graffiti Artist, Awesome
