Kelly’s Recommendation:

Facebook Group: Actually, Laura Dale Is A Very Pleasant Person

laura

  • Laura Dale is an actress that has appeared in some of our favorite Syfy Original movies including Lake Placid vs. Anaconda and Roboshark.
  • Despite playing very unpleasant characters in her movies, she is very cool on twitter and was kind enough to live tweet along.
  • Despite Mel’s lack of enthusiasm for Facebook, she joined this group, because Laura Dale is in fact a very pleasant person.

And while your over on the Facebook.. go join Harbor Day, Kelly’s other group of malcontents.  It’s a closed group so your family doesn’t have to know about it….

Social Media Recommendations:

Kelly’s Recommendation: @TrennaKeating: the glorious Doc Yewll on Defiance!

  Mel’s Recommendation: @XplodingUnicorn: he’s a funny guy y’all.

  • There’s a cool Comic that explains how the Flu actually led to Correlates existence.
  • You can narrow your search by state, time frame, and even by drawing your own graph line.
  • You can also import your own data, which seems pretty useful.

Episode 88 – 16 plus 8

This week we discuss a sports special Mel might actually watch and relive 8 track glory.

Kelly’s Recommendation:

16thMan

Documentary: 30 for 30: The 16th Man

  • An ESPN Special about Nelson Mandela, the “Springbok” Rugby team, and South Africa’s transition to integrate the nation after Apartheid.
  • Narrated by Morgan Freeman. this documentary features interviews with players and various political activists of the time.
  • Minimal actual rugby in the special. Which is good, since Kelly has no clue about how the game is played.
  • This will be the first of 30 sports specials Mel is going to watch!!!

Mel’s Recommendation:

8-tracks

Music Service: 8Tracks.com

  • This is a streaming music service that features user created playlists of at least 8 tracks.
  • The neat thing here is that you can upload your own (legally acquired) music if it’s not already in their database.
  • It’s also available for iOS and Android.
  • There are tons of “Fandom” type playlists about particular characters you know and love. I listened to quite a few that were odes to Black Widow.
  • We reminisce about the actual real 8 Tracks.
  • I uploaded a funny little playlist about Shapeshifter Romance novels. 😉

Kelly sneaked in and added “The Black Widow” by Alice Cooper to the post (listen to Mel’s recommendation to know why this HAD to be done) ….

Episode 87 – AV Club

This week Mel and Kelly recommend some audio and video fun…

Mel’s Recommendation:

Website: GraphicAudio.net: A Movie In Your Mind

  • A cool company that adapts books into an amazing listening experience with a full cast of voice actors and sound effects.
  • Their audiobooks are available as both cd’s and as mp3, m4B, and FLAC.
  • If you go the download route, you can use their app (iOS, Android) to download your books.
  • I just finished City of the Lost by Stephen Blackmoore and loved it! His first Eric Carter book, Dead Things just released as well.
  • They also have a whole slew of Marvel titles including Ant Man.
  • Titles are reasonably priced and there are even some short stories that run ~$3.99 you can give a spin. Check them out in the Little Bytes section.
  • Oh, and they have Westerns too!

Kelly’s Recommendation:

Periscope-Logo

App: Periscope.tv

  • Periscope is a live video streaming app that integrates with Twitter to share your experiences with the world.
  • It’s available for both Android and iOS.
  • Once you start a video stream, your viewers get to interact with you in chat.
  • Broadcasters (called Scopers) are broadcasting everything from breaking news to the NSFW type stuff.
  • The Nerdist is using Periscope a lot!

Kelly’s Social Media Corner:

Make a Hologram Projector for your phone via Nerdist.

Episode 86 – Moonfit

In this episode we finally emerge from the seemingly endless (three weeks) darkness of Kelly not having an older recommendation than Mel.

Kelly’s recommendation:

ATripToTheMoon

Movie: A Trip To The Moon (made in 1902)

  • It was directed by Georges Melies IN 1902!
  • The FIRST Science Fiction movie ever made!
  • Since it’s from 1902, it’s a Silent Movie.
  • They may have gotten Astronomers and Astrologers a little mixed up.
  •  It’s available on Netflix in both Black & White and Color.
  • Also available at Amazon Instant Video (FREE for Prime Members) 😛
  • And finally, since it was made in 1902, Kelly regains his Trophy for the Oldest Recommendation Ever Made on Nurture and Support.
  • FYI, this was made in 1902.

trophy

Mel’s recommendation:

FitbitChargeHR

Gadget: Fitbit Charge HR

  • Mel upgraded to her 3rd Fitbit and talks Pros and Cons of a couple of the Fitbit Models.
  • Fitbits are nifty little gadgets that track your movement and hence your calories burned throughout the day. Sync this data with a “Diet Tracker” like Spark People or My Fitness Pal and you get to eat more. Well, as long as your active anyway.
  • The Charge HR also tracks Sleep automatically, tracks your Heart Rate (the HR part), and has a strap with a buckle that stays buckled.
  • The Fitbit Flex is also a good model that you can buy 3rd party replacement wristbands with good buckles and cuter designs.

Kelly’s Social Media Recommendation Station:

YouTube: The Slow Mo Guys: Here’s what they have to say for themselves: “On this channel, Gavin Free and Dan Gruchy take a $150,000 high speed camera to show you the world hundreds of times slower than you can see with your own eyes. You should subscribe. It’s pretty cool.”
