Episode 75 – Queen of the Droning Flash Rats

Mel’s Recommendation:

rat-queens-vol-01-releases

Comic: Rat Queens written by Kurtis J Wiebe and art by Roc Upchurch and then Stjepan Sejic

Matt’s Recommendation:

Matt Shivers (@MattShiversVO) returns for more abuse!

TheFlash

TV Series: The Flash

  • A DC Small Screen production of the popular comic that airs on the CW Tuesdays at 8/7 C.
  • Grant Gustin plays Barry Allen aka The Flash
  • John Wesley Shipp, who played Barry Allen in the 90s version of The Flash returns as Henry Allen, Barry’s Dad. And Amanda Pays returns as Dr. Tina McGee! Also, Mark Hamil came back as The Trickster too!
  • Matt teaches Kelly about The Reverse Flash!

Kelly’s Recommendation:

maxresdefault

Tech/Gadget: Parrot AR Drone 2.0 Elite Edition

  • Just like his other Parrot drone recommendation – this drone is VERY stable when left to its own devices
  • It stores video real time to your mobile device or you can hook up a USB flash drive to the drone
  • 10 – 15 minutes of flying time – so you might want to buy a spare battery
  • The drone acts as a wifi hotspot and you connect to it to pilot it
  • Kelly’s neighbors are SUPER thrilled

And here is over 8 minutes of video from Kelly’s first set of flights.  Pretty boring, but you might want to watch until around the 1 minute, 12 second mark, where Kelly nearly rams a tree.

In this SHOCKING episode, Mel recommends some non-cello-based music and Kelly recommends a book.. that he READ.

Kelly’s Recommendation:

Bif

Book: Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

  • Biff was bff’s with Jesus (aka Joshua) back in the day. He gets resurrected 2000 years later by an Angel to tell the tale.
  • This story full of lizards, healings, demons, kung fu, and Maggie Magdalene promises to make you laugh.
  • The book also provides a sound explanation for the whole rabbit/Easter thing

Mel’s Recommendation:

MPMadigan

Music: Outshine the Dusk by Molly Pinto Madigan

  • Modern folk ballads that feel like each song is a fairy tale.
  • Available all the usual places online: Spotify, Bandcamp, CD Baby
  • Mel’s favs are Persephone’s Lament, Dusk, and Bloom.
  • Molly’s new release, Wildwood Bride is also great. You can get it at all the places listed above.

Episode 73 – A Shep and a Spader

This week Mel and Kelly recommend two very different masterminds.

Mel’s Recommendation:

TheBlacklist

TV Series: The Blacklist

  • The Blacklist stars James Spader as “Red” Reddington, a criminal mastermind who turns himself in to the FBI in order to catch other criminals. Of course he has an agenda and it’s up to Agent Keen to discover just what that is while she also searches for the truth about their shared past.
  • Season 1 is available on Netflix and Season 2 will be wrapping up shortly on NBC. It currently airs on Thurs nights at 9 PM EST on NBC.

TV Series: Battle Creek on CBS

  • Battle Creek stars Dean Winters and Josh Duhamel with an amazing supporting cast.
  • It’s a super fun and witty story about a cynical sarcastic cop who has to team up with the Ken Doll of the FBI.

Episode 71 – Go Loopy for Lost Wax

In this episode you can learn to make a steampunk hat, and then hang it up ANYWHERE.

Mel’s Recommendation:

MiniTopHats

Website/ YouTube Channel: Lost Wax

  • Yes, more crafting awesomeness. You know I can’t resist Steampunk! ~M
  • Lost Wax is the name of Chris Huebert’s website and YouTube channel. He creates amazingly beautiful steampunk jewelry and also has a number of fun, affordable DIY Steampunk tutorials on Youtube.
  • The tutorial videos are free to watch, but for the detailed plans (with full templates, etc) you give him a few bucks at his gumroad site. Each video has the link to its associated tutorial. They are very affordable at ~$5.00 and only use easily found materials.
  • His newest video, the Steampunk Gas Mask, is one of my favorites! (See below) I don’t have mine finished yet, but I will post pics as soon as I do. STAY TUNED!

 Kelly’s Recommendation:goloopie

Gadget: GoLoopie

  • GoLoopie is a neat little gadget that gives you a lightweight and portable hook anywhere that you need one.
  • You know you never have a handy hook when you need one! And it’s only $4.99 at goloopie.com
  • You just slip the Loop part around a cart handle, chair back, or anything really and you get a sturdy little hook to hang your purse, coat, shopping bags, etc from.
  • If your having trouble picturing this contraption, look here, and marvel at it’s genius simplicity.
  • It’s not available at Amazon…… Mel looked. 😀

Social Media Recommendations:

Mel: @JDHancock: Makes great pics featuring all of your favorite action figures!

Kelly: The Warp Zone: a YouTube channel that makes rap battle type videos. Check out Hodor vs Groot below… Make sure your subtitles are on… !!!

Episode 70 – Digging E.T.’s Threads

Kelly’s Recommendation:

 atari-gameover1

Movie/Documentary: Atari: Game Over

  • Available on Netflix, this documentary about the decline of Atari and the legendary search for the E.T. graveyard, will touch a place deep in the heart of every gaming nerd of a certain age. 😉
  •  It also tells the story of Howard Warshaw, the creator of many Atari games such as Yar’s Revenge, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the infamous E.T.
  • It features Atari fans such as Ernest Cline (author of Ready Player One) and George R.R. Martin (author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series aka Game of Thrones). Look here for an awesome pic of the two in his DeLorean!

Atari2600a

Mel’s Recommendation:

threadbanger

Video Series: Threadbanger on Youtube

  • Rob and Corrine have been DIYing Crafty stuff for years! These days they are mainly doing 2 shows that feature either Rob (Man vs. Pin) or Corrine (Corinne vs. Pin) battling their way through some popular Pinterest crafts. They. Are. Awesome.
  • One of my absolute favorites is below. It features Rob attempting a needle felted Easter Bunny. It contains swearing and bloodshed. You’ve been warned!

Social Media Recommendations:

Kelly: @kellietweets22: Live-tweeter extraordinaire.

Mel: @natgeo on Instagram: the spectacular pictures we expect from National Geographic.

Episode 69 – Play the Misfit Card

 Mel’s Recommendation:

CardCrawl

Game App: Card Crawl

  • A fun solitaire style dungeon crawler game. Let me explain: You pit your avatar card’s face value against monster cards attack value while collecting coin cards and health potion cards. If you survive to the end, you win the hand and get to keep the coins you collected. You get to use these to buy special ability cards.
  • Simple right? It’s more challenging than it sounds.
  • The app is available on iTunes for $1.99 and that’s it. There are no power ups to buy or anything else, which makes me happy!

Kelly’s Recommendation:

TheKinks_Misfits

Music: Misfits ~ The Kinks

  • a 1978 album by The Kinks!
  • Features the only known (to us) song about Hayfever.
  • This album covers fun topics like Allergies (Hayfever), Hair Dressing (Permanent Waves), and Cross Dressing (Out of the Wardrobe)
  • Here’s your Spotify link or listen on Youtube below:

Episode 68 – Las Fairy

Kelly’s Recommendation:

Travel: Cheap (& Legal) Ways to Kill Time in Las Vegas

LasVegas

  • Original tips and tricks by Kelly himself!
  • We’ve got low roller activities on The Strip and Downtown on Freemont Street
  • Kelly’s favorite low roller reference site: http://www.cheapovegas.com/
  • Wondering where the best “cheap food” is? How about some loose slots? Looking for a casino with friendly (i.e. helpful) dealers? Wanna know where the WHITE CASTLE is on The Strip???  Look down!

casino-royale

Casino Royale is also home to low limit table games, $1 Michelobs, and $1.99 foot long hot dogs!  Did we mention THEY HAVE A WHITE CASTLE??

Mel’s Recommendation:

 DeadontheDelta

Book: Dead on the Delta by Stacy Jay

  • 2 words: Fairy Apocalypse
  • This urban fantasy takes place in Louisiana in the aftermath of mutant Tinkerbell sized venomous fairy apocalypse.
  • Annabell Lee is one of only a small percentage of the population immune to fairy venom. This means she gets fun jobs, like collecting corpses that are outside the iron gates of the town.
  • This is a fun, extremely fast paced murder mystery with a gritty heroine who’s not about to let venom-crazed junkies, pint-sized murderous fairies, or the FBI get in her way.

Social Media Recommendations:

Kelly: @julieannemery: Betsy Kettleman herself from Better Call Saul

Also, @JeremyShamos: Mr. Craig Kettleman from Better Call Saul
