Episode 8 – A cappella, a swashbuckling fella, a Dresden, and a dirtbag

In episode 8 Mel and Kel regale the audience with recommendations on the only wizard in the phone book, the James Bond of cheesy sci fi, a fantastic a cappella singer, and some episodic political chicanery.

Kelly’s recommendations

Book: Retief series by Keith Laumer

Fun reads ranging from short stories to full books that satirically detail the adventures of Jame Retief of the Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne (CDT).  Kelly will shoot you a 56-x (disapproval with significant judgment) if you don’t.  Read one of the stories and the previous sentence will be quite funny.

RetiefAndThePanGalactic_baen

Streaming: House of Cards (Netflix)

Scheming and evil in Washington DC brought to you by Netflix.  Just more fun to watch than the real stuff.  Season 2 starts February 14!!

Mel’s Recommendations:

Book: The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Harry Dresden is the only Wizard in the phone book. This urban fantasy features a myriad of fun characters including plain ol’ humans, demonic flying monkeys, vampires, werewolves, and an air elemental named Bob with a porn addiction. This is a terrifically fun urban fantasy series that is well worth the time spent reading through all 14 books in the series, starting with Storm Front. Book 15, Skin Game will be out May 27, 2014!

Music: Peter Hollens

Peter is an amazing A Capella singer with some very entertaining music videos.

Episode 2 – Zombies, Vampires, Zombies AND Vampires, and a Tiny Death Star

Episode 2 : Where Kelly and Mel bring you  more book recommendations and a game app!

BOOK – Day by Day Armageddon by J.L. Bourne

Kelly leads off with a zombie book series: the first book in the series is “Day by Day Armageddon” by J.L. Bourne. This zombie apocalypse tale told in day by day journal entries spans 3 books. Check out his website www.tacticalunderground.us for a sample chapter and is available at all book outlets.

APP – Tiny Death Star

Kelly’s second recommendation this week is Tiny Death Star. Admit it, you’ve always wanted a fully operational Death Star. It’s available on all major app stores, iTunes, Google Play, and Windows Phone.

PODCAST & BOOK – Underwood and Flinch

Mel has 2 books this week. Well, the first one is a podcast AND a book, “Underwood and Flinch” by Mike Bennett. This is pure vampire goodness! Underwood is an old fashioned vampire, no sparkling allowed! The new season, “Blood and Smoke” just started so make sure you start at the beginning if you’re new to this one. You can find Mike at numerous places online, but start out at www.mikebennetpodcast.com then go subscribe to his podcast on iTunes! If you would rather read the books without listening to Mike’s excellent narration, check them out on Amazon.

BOOK – Double Dead by Chuck Wendig

Mel’s second book this week has both zombies AND vampires! Have you ever wondered what would happen if a zombie bit a vampire? Check out “Double Dead” and “Double Dead: Bad Blood” by Chuck Wendig to find out. Chuck’s blog terribleminds.com is also recommended reading!

Episode 1 – Scott Stratten and Redshirts

Icon

Welcome to the first episode of Nurture and Support!

Mel starts off by by talking about a book. This will happen a lot, so prepare yourselves.

BOOKRedshirts by John Scalzi. Mr. Scalzi has an active blog entitled Whatever. Mel was apparently wrong when she told you it was different. She promises not to let that happen again, but don’t hold your breath.

MUSICRedshirts by Jonathan Coulton. This is a song based on John Scalzi’s book of the same name. Please check out his other music at his website here.

Kelly had recently attended a conference where Scott Stratten was a keynote speaker and his session provided all of Kelly’s recommendations, which were….

BOOK – QR Codes Kill Kittens: How to Alienate Customers, Dishearten Employees, and Drive Your Business into the Ground – This is Scott’s most recent book and is FULL of funny pictures (YAY pictures) and stories of horrible uses of QR codes and other marketing mishaps.

PODCASTS – Scott has two awesome video podcasts, the UnPodcast (about Marketing, speaking, publishing, social media, etc.) and TheVegas30 (enjoying Las Vegas for the 30+ crowd) available on his YouTube channel and iTunes as well

APP – NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO – Need to invoke Darth Vader’s soul crushing “nooooooooooooooo”?  Scott created a website and an app so you can play it whenever needed.  The app is currently only available on Android as the iPhone version undergoes the Sith-like iTunes store review.

Introduction

Nurture and Support is a podcast about sharing cool discoveries.  It might be a good book, an old/new movie, a great app for your phone, or a podcast almost as fun as this one.

While these could be nearly anything, common themes will likely emerge related to: bad sci-fi movies, zombies, corgis (Mel), Alice Cooper (Kelly), Firefly, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, etc…

Each episode we  share our latest “finds” with each other.  We would love to share yours as well!  Please drop us a note at nurtandsupp@gmail.com if you have something to share.
