Squat Cobbler 27 – Ice Cream and Soy Sauce

This week is not for the children.  Fair Warning.

Mike’s bandmate Corey joins the show and things get off to a rocky start right off the bat regarding the episode number.  Then Mike is Mike.  Then the recommendations…

Mike’s Recommendation – Synthwave artist Vampire Stepdad

Synth wave music plus a vampire pitching why he will be awesome as your step dad.  Full show below.

Corey’s Recommendation – Critical Role

Critical Role on the Geek and Sundry YouTube channel features several outstanding voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons.  They are also on Twitch.  Kelly and Corey determined Mike would be a Chaotic Neutral ex-cleric in a mumu if he ever played D&D.

Kelly’s Recommendation – Chapter 27 (2007)

Chapter 27 depicts Mark David Chapman’s days in New York prior to him shooting John Lennon.  It provides a great deal of the details surrounding this event and features a bloated Jared Leto as Chapman.

Squat Cobbler 26: Alice Cooper – Flush the Fashion (review)

This week Mike and Kelly discuss Alice Cooper’s 12th album, “Flush the Fashion”….for longer than the album’s actual run time.  A likable album, but Alice’s foray into New Wave was not 100% successful in their minds.

Audio is a little rough on this one gang.  There were a lot of Google Hangout issues and Mike ended up doing the show from his phone.  Sorry about that.  Way to phone it in Mike.

Here is the Pink Lady and Jeff appearance Kelly mentioned of Alice singing “Clones (We’re All)”…

SMLTBCBPB (Song most likely to be covered by Pat Boone):

Squat Cobbler 25 – Sherpa of Morality

Comedy, gorillas, and a return to an explicit iTunes rating (fair warning)

Kelly’s Recommendation

Mike Birbiglia – Thank God for Jokes

Mike Birbiglia is one of Kelly’s favorite comedians.  His most recent show called “Thank God for Jokes” is on Netflix and is outstanding.  Here is an example of Mike’s awesome material from an earlier time…

Note: There is a fair amount of non-family friendly material between Kelly’s and Mike’s recommendations.  (Mike’s fault)

Mike’s Recommendation

Album: Ape-X by Gorilla Voltage

Gorilla Voltage is a new group on Twisted’s label.  Ape-X is an album of great musicality with metal and rap roots.

Squat Cobbler 24: From the Inside – Alice Cooper (review)

This week Mike and Kelly discuss Alice Cooper’s 11th album, “From the Inside”….for a VERY long time.  That is what you get when an album is this good. There is also some bonus general album cover art discussion in this episode.

Kelly is considering an online petition to get Alice the start playing “For Veronica’s Sake” from this album at his live shows.  Listen and agree…

SMLTBCBPB (Song most likely to be covered by Pat Boone):

Episode 133 – Swords Galore

Kelly can’t pass up another chance to praise The Sword and the Sorcerer movie. Also there’s a toad, and maybe a cat.

Mel’s Recommendation:

Video: Man At Arms and Man At Arms Reforged on the AWE me Channel

  • I am ridiculously fascinated by this show.
  • Basically some amazing artisans make REAL WEAPONS from movies and games.
  • Seriously, check out the Lich King’s sword from Warcraft. So. Cool.
  • The entire playlist is below. Watch it.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUUGFk1wE5OHqeNDwp2q9_ZiPqKlWNc6V

Here’s the sword from The Sword and the Sorcerer, if you have managed to miss this gem of a movie.

Kelly’s Recommendation:

Book: The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

  • This is essentially a cool history book about the world of Westeros.
  • It fills in a lot of depth to the backstory of the Game of Thrones series.
  • Confused by all the Targaryens, this will clear it up!

Social Media Corner:

Kelly: Chris Newsome aka @toadhatguy This may be the best thing EVER. Chris makes little hats to put on a real live toad.

Squat Cobbler 23 – Mortiis and Tonio K.

A rare show where Kelly is first to earn the “explicit” iTunes rating for the podcast.  Apologies to all whales.

Kelly’s Recommendation

Album: Tonio K. – Rodent Weekend ’76-’96 (Approximately)

A collection of Tonio K. unreleased songs including “Everything (Including You) Disgusts Me”, “Funky Western Civilization (Phase 2)”, and “Harness the Hamster” featuring the very awesome actual hamster John Paul III….

Mike’s Recommendation

Album: AIDS to the People – Vond

The long missing Vond EP “AIDS to the People” has finally been released.  You can go here to get it and many other works by their founder Mortiis.  Mortiis and his various bands were heavily influential on Mike’s music.  This is a long lost gem you won’t want to miss!

Note: the bonus razor blade is no longer part of Vond’s “Selvmord” packaging.   #thanksobama

Episode 132- Child Sized Ear Holes

Mel has problems, but Kelly has some music that will help.

Kelly’s Recommendation:

Album: Disney’s Music From the Park

  • Released in 1996, this album has popular music artists performing renditions of popular songs from Disney movies.
  • Includes Patti Austin, The Pointer Sisters, Olivia Newton-John, and the amazing gem from Tim Curry below.
  • The album is no longer available on youtube, but you can go get it on Amazon.

Not on this album, but still awesome:

Mel’s Recommendation:

Device: Apple Airpods

  • They are super cool, they hold a charge for a long time, they have a cool charge case.
  • They run $159 from Apple and there’s a wait. So you should get on the list now.
  • If you have Child Sized Ear holes like Mel, they are very comfortable.

Social Media Corner:

Kelly: Daniel Newman: @DanielNewman He has a blue checkmark, is on The Walking Dead, and a cool N at the end of his name. Go follow him!

Mel: Ethan Kocak: @blackmudpuppy He likes herps and has a webcomic at blackmudpuppy.com. He’s also the artist behind a lot of the scientists’ cartoon avi on twitter. Hit him up, he’ll make you one too.

Squat Cobbler 22: Alice Cooper – Lace and Whiskey (review)

This week Mike and Kelly discuss Alice Cooper’s 10th album, “Lace and Whiskey”.  After a very strong start with the first three songs, things start to drift a bit.  There is a bit of a comeback on side 2 with “King of the Silver Screen”, but this side also includes a song that Mike rightfully describes as “Abba-esque”.

As promised, Alice on Johnny Carson singing the title track…

Episode 131- Crafting Some Extreme Sports

Kelly quizzes Mel on sportsball. You don’t want to miss it.

Mel’s Recommendation:

YouTube Channel: Yvonne Williams of Back To Earth Creations

  • Yvonne does it all y’all: Wire wrapped jewelry, chainmail jewelry, polymer clay, cosplay, leather crafting, gardening, and urban homesteading.
  • Yvonne is one of the happiest people on YouTube, y’all. She makes me a little happier every time I watch her videos.
  • I just want to say that I was following her BEFORE Adam Savage posted her Dragon Eye of Sauron video. So there. Anyway, go watch it; it’s uber cool.
  • She also takes custom orders, so you should do that.
  • Below is a vid she made using a similar dragon eye in a wire wrapped bracelet.

Kelly’s Recommendation:

Documentary: ESPN’s 30 for 30: This Was the XFL

  • Dick Ebersol and Vince McMahon got together and put the XFL on NBC. For One Season.
  • After NBC decided to pass on airing the NFL in 2001, Vince McMahon got his chance to create the football league of his dreams.
  • Find out about the guy with “He Hate Me” on the back of his jersey.
  • Amazingly, a few players went on to actually play in the NFL.
  • Sadly, you need to have access to ESPN to watch this one. It’s not up on Netflix.
  • Check out this commercial for the XFL.

Squat Cobbler 21: Alice Cooper Goes To Hell (review)

This week Mike and Kelly discuss Alice Cooper’s 9th album, “Alice Cooper Goes To Hell”.  There are some fun moments on this record, but both of them found parts of it over-produced and not as gritty as some of his earlier work.  That said, an album that suggests hell is actually a disco can’t be all that bad.

While a tour was planned, it ended up being cancelled due to Alice’s heath at the time.  This is a shame, because these clips give us just a hint of the wonderful show that would have been…
